i think his point is that our country was founded on an ideal of unity centered around human freedom...a diverse group unified around the cause of democracy.
i think the intension behind the latter part of his statement is that the highest manifestation of the natural world is in humans that are unified, not divided. it's some hippie peace-love shit, but i dig it.
