What a load of reductionist crap. It baffles me why Republicans continue with the supposition that because Democrats are critical of the strategies and facilitation of the War on Terror, that we must necessarily be "soft" on terrorism. There's no comparing fascism and fanaticism with democracy and the fool that tries is not only wrong but defensive to the point of being counter productive. Senator McCain is a great man, but he showcases the worst part of the Republican right when he resorts to this sort of partisan rhetoric.

I don't understand why Republicans, and politicians in general have to distill things down to these false dichotomies. It's not that either our mistakes or their ideals decides why someone would attack us, it can be both as well as many other things. Republicans seem to need an enemy. If America is its own reason why we could be attacked, it causes an unacceptable paradox for them.

I think we've become such an apathetic society that we crave those dichotomies because they're easy. Freedom vs. terrorism, good vs. evil. They require no effort, no reflection or analysis. It's easier to make those false assumptions as opposed to stepping up to the responsibility of educating ourselves and each other on the complexity of these issues. I think Republicans count on that apathy and those dichotomies; and because they're such a party of loyalists it makes them particularly easy to manipulate (though certainly some Democrats fall into the 'easy to manipulate' category, too).
I'm coming down hard on the GOP and I don't mean to. There are many thoughtful, intelligent Republicans, it just seems they'd rather have a dicussion about military might then addressing inequities in our public schools or health care coverage. It seems to be more chest pounding then anything and its tiresome for me.

This quote is pretty ironic, having just watched Charlie Wilson's War. Our greatest mistakes seem to be the same ones that have created the enemies that "despises us and our ideals."

So really it's true. They despise many of our ideals, including invading countries didn't attack us, having a military presence where it doesn't belong, helping one side of a fight and then the other side so both can eradicate each other, and then, of course, install a puppet regime. All core ideals for us as of late.

Kassidy made a beautiful point which I wish more people would take note of:
We need to better educate ourselves and each other. It's no secret that most people find it easier to simply regurgitate what they've heard rather than to actually look at the facts and come to their own conclusions. Republican, Democrat, Green or whatever. And by taking the information we're given and not questioning, not verifying our facts or looking for the other side of the story, we allow ourselves to be 'easy to manipulate'.

And i've just added Charlie Wilson's War to my que.
